  • ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14

It's been an amazing year in the life of U&I. Here's a sneak peek at all that happened! 365 days in 5 minutes!

  • U&I'S KEY PROGRAMS

Non-formal Education for underprivileged women and children

With twenty three classes a week, in ten education based Learning Centers catering to over 300 students across the city, U&I helps increase the employability of women, children and youth from lesser privileged backgrounds with courses in English, tuitions and life skills. Statistics prove that simple knowledge of English in a metro city increases a youth's employability by 400%. With 450 teaching volunteers, U&I is able to work with these women, children and young adults giving them a better tomorrow.

    Transforming Institutional Care

At U&I Care, our vision is to transform institutional care in our country. U&I assists in the care and rehabilitation of 85 mentally challenged boys in the Institute of Mentally Handicapped Children (a state run institution) near Dairy Circle. With 9 staff working full time on this project, U&I provides medical care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and grooming for the boys at the Home. In the last two years, U&I has made a tremendous impact on the level of care and rehabilitation provided to these boys who have been abandoned by their families.

    Raising Awareness, Inspiring Action

At U&I, we believe that everyone can make a difference. Every year, U&I conducts social awareness events and campaigns in schools, colleges and companies inspiring people to take action and be the change in society. Over the last two years, U&I has reached over 100,000 people through seminars, talks, short films and social media challenging them to get involved in social action.
At U&I, we believe in the power of story-telling and that the stories of the children we work with deserve to be told. U&I has made two short-films, 'A Pocketful of Dreams' and 'A Handful of Dreams'.

We have 450 volunteers who work with us through the year. This gives us the ability to work with a student-teacher ratio of 1:3 which gives the children the  personal attention they deserve.
U&I worked with 9 Learning Centres in Bangalore for the year 2013-14. We're currently expanding to 5 other cities in South India and are also looking at reaching 10 cities by the end of this year.
U&I teaches English to around 200 kids in the city of Bangalore. This year, they scored an average of 71% in total.
The U&I volunteers conduct tuitions for the children at some of the homes. Subjects taught are Math, Science and Social Sciences. This year saw some of kids score more than 70% in their SSLC examination.
  • U&I CARE

  • U&I IMPACT

    U&I has 2 nurses, 5 assistant carers,
1 physiotherapist and 1 manager who work with 85 special needs boys on a daily basis.
There was a drastic reduction in lice at the Government Home for Boys. The boys are well taken care of by the staff and go through regular medical check-ups conducted by professionals.
There has been a complete eradication of scabies among the boys at the Home. Consistent treatment has ensured high standards of hygiene and skin care.
Intensive physiotherapy for 11 boys with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities has improved fine and gross motor movements in the boys.
17 boys are engaged throughout the day in play activities to increase the attention, concentration and reaction to the environment around them.
40 volunteers visit the Home every Sunday and provide 1:2 attention to all the boys. They engage the boys in a curriculum with pre-academic, sports and vocational activities.
  • STORY

    Sadaab

Sadaab, one of the older boys at the Institute was well known for two main characteristics – every time he walked past a smaller boy, he would hit him. There was no real anger or purpose for this, he just liked hitting. He would get into fights with the other boys regularly where he would chase them across the grounds to hit them. The second and nicer characteristic was he would greet the people he knew by name with a big smile on his face. It made the person at the receiving end smile right back at him.

Unfortunately, his behaviour of hitting other boys showed no signs of reducing even after many conversations and disciplining. Since this was resulting in a lot boys being bruised, the team sat down to discuss a new plan of action. It was decided to include him in vocational therapy and give him some painting activity. This worked like a charm! Sadaab loved painting and was incredibly good at it. He needed very little instruction and direction and would be lost in a world of his own while he painted on paper and ice cream sticks.
