It’s a collection of portraits,
and a statement about how our team
is redefining what’s possible in education & rehabilitation.
THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL ANNUAL REPORT
"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. This I did."
T. E. Lawrence
Five years ago when Ajit and I started dreaming about U&I, it did seem like we were day dreaming. We never envisioned that a dream that started with a handful of volunteers teaching 15 children in our tiny office would grow into a movement that’s racing towards reaching 1000 children with 1000 volunteers in 10 cities. We’ve dared to dream big because of people like you.Our dream has been made possible because you decided to dream with us and believewith us, that change is possible!
For Ajit and me, every year at U&I has been an incredible journey. We've loved journeying with our staff and volunteers who dream the impossible and work towards it. Last year (2014 -2015) was no different. This report speaks of another year in which we've seen a huge impact in the work done. As you read through the stats, numbers and all the outstanding results our kids have been able to achieve, I'd like you to know that none of this would have been possible without you... The fact that you believe in the work U&I does and invest in it, makes all this possible. We are grateful for all that we have been able to accomplish in the year gone by but we are even more excited about what’s in store for us this year. As we gear up for the year ahead, our focus for this season can be summed up in 3 words -Impactful, Scalable and Sustainable. As always, we have set some outrageous goals for ourselves this year but we know we can achieve them because we know we work with dangerous men & women- dreamers of the day. Because we believe together - you and I will act on our dreams and make them possible.

We strive to keep our programs highly impactful in all their aspects as we work towards providing 360°, holistic care for the men, women, and children we work with.
As we grow in size, we want to ensure that the quality of our education and care grows with U&I. Two key areas that we are focusing on to aid with quality control are Training and Fundraising. These tools will, in turn, improve the employability and standard of living of the men, women, and children we support.
In India, the main problem with education is no longer about access, but quality.
Out of the 95% of children that enroll in schools, 90% drop out before the 10th grade.
The average teacher-student ratio, which in some schools can be as low as 1:50, results in a lack of personal attention to the child, leading to disinterest and an ebbing motivation to study.
The students also lack academic role models in their communities as most of them are first generation learners.
We focus on English classes and syllabus based tuitions after school to help our students with their existing curriculums. Studies have shown that a basic knowledge of English increases employability by 400% and that with each passing grade, earning capacity increases by 10%
U&I recruits its teaching volunteers from India’s top colleges. Equipped with class room management tools from the Flippen Group and with a teacher-student ratio of 1:3, each volunteer can provide each child with the attention and care they deserve.
LOW-COST DELIVERY MODEL
We run a lean and efficient volunteer driven model that ensures high engagement with low financial investment. For Rs. 750 a month, we provide English classes, customized tuitions, health care camps, psychological assessments and career counseling for our students

U&I TEACH - IMPACT
Studies indicate that less than 10% of students in Government Schools make it to the 10th grade. We provide a community that encourages them to keep studying and a support system that helps them with their classes and homework. By showing the children the innumerable opportunities that come from a completed education, we hope to kindle in them a flame that will keep them inspired to never stop learning.

Chian is a quiet boy. He likes to isolate himself and prefers not to interact with anyone. Chian hasn’t spoken a single word in years.
Teachers at his center discovered that he finds it incredibly difficult to talk and express himself due to the neglect and lack of attention he has received throughout his life.
This led his teachers to engage him in rigorous speech therapy and now Chian is able to whisper simple words like ‘hi’, ‘bye’ and ‘yes’. Now, he greets people he knows with a smile, shakes their hand and even attempts to speak.
It is amazing to watch Chian grow.
U&I CARE - IMPACT
Numbers only say so much.
We could tell you how for the first time all the boys in the home are engaged in a class through the day.Or how well the children undergoing physiotherapy are doing.
Or how the moderately challenged boys attending class can now identify colors, animals and shapes.Or we could just tell you one boy's story.
Because in his story, you see glimpses of what genuine, heartfelt care can do for every man, woman, and child.
